Avignon is a smaller historic town in southeastern France between Marseille and Lyon. It used to be called the "City of the Popes" because the papacy resided there between 1309-1377. It was also a critical economic location, evidenced by its castle towers looming over its strategic position by the river. Fit for a day trip on the way to the southern coast or upwards.
